Is Remapping Legal & Safe?

A common and reasonable question. Here's a straightforward answer, without spin either way.

Common questions

FAQ

Is ECU remapping legal in the UK?

Remapping itself isn't illegal, but the resulting vehicle must still meet MOT emissions requirements and be declared to your insurer. Removing emissions equipment such as a DPF is a separate matter and affects both MOT compliance and road legality.

Do I need to tell my insurer?

Yes. A remap is a modification, and insurers generally expect it to be declared. Not doing so can affect a claim later on.

Will remapping damage my engine?

A properly calibrated Stage 1 remap works within safe limits for standard hardware. Problems tend to come from poorly done maps, not remapping as a concept.

Can a remap be reversed?

Yes, a proper remap keeps a backup of your original software, so it can be restored if needed, for resale, warranty work, or any other reason.

Does remapping affect my MOT?

A well-done remap on a standard vehicle shouldn't cause MOT issues. Removing emissions equipment like a DPF is a different matter and can cause an MOT failure.

Our approach

We tell you what's what

We won't overwrite software we don't recognise, and we're upfront about what's road legal and what isn't. If something you're asking about affects MOT compliance, we'll tell you honestly rather than just take the work.
